Overview

What this award does

The Emerging Artist Award recognizes artists in the first years of professional practice — the period when the work is real, the reviews are few, and time is the scarcest resource.

Unlike the Premier Award, this program is not tied to a single project. Recipients may use the award for studio or rehearsal time, instruments and equipment, professional documentation, travel to auditions or residencies, or simply protected time to work.

Recipients are also invited into the Foundation's storytelling work, including the possibility of an interview in A Life in the Arts.

Questions

Frequently asked

What counts as emerging?
The Foundation reads career stage rather than age. Artists who have begun professional practice but have not yet had sustained institutional support are the intended recipients.
Can I apply if I am still a student?
Yes, if you are also working professionally outside your program. Work created solely for a degree is not evaluated.
Do I need a project plan?
No. Describe your practice and what protected time or resources would allow. Specific plans are welcome but not required.
How are recipients announced?
Recipients are announced on the Foundation's news page and introduced individually with a short profile.
